On May 20, the iTechStyle Awards took place, recognizing innovative companies and products in the textile sector. At this edition, INOVAFIL won the Best Fabric award for its Terramori yarn, which is made from organic cotton and Portuguese silk, highlighting its commitment to innovation.

Rui Martins, CEO of INOVAFIL, explained that the initial contact with Portuguese silk came through a local producer, revealing an unknown tradition of silk production in the northern part of the country. Although national silk is used in other industries, INOVAFIL chose to experiment with “peace” silk, which involves using the cocoon after the silkworm has transformed into a butterfly. In partnership with CITEVE, the company converts the cocoons into fiber, using a small percentage of silk, as it is not yet feasible to use high percentages of silk, combined with organic cotton.

Rui Martins believes that with support and investment, silk production in Portugal can be expanded while preserving local know-how. The initial samples have already attracted interest from brands, and the next step will be to conduct a proof of concept with top brands focused on sustainability and animal welfare.
